FACTORY DESCRIPTION
Model: XLD/A24/SSPVB/500
Condition: Brand New
The MWC Kampfschwimmer (Military Diver) 500 m water-resistant series with helium escape valve represents one of MWC’s most robust heavy-duty diving watches. The case construction is significantly stronger than that of most standard military dive watches and incorporates enhanced crown protection. This model is also fitted with an impact-resistant sapphire crystal and a scratch-resistant ceramic bezel, ensuring excellent durability in demanding environments.
The Kampfschwimmer range features a wider 24 mm strap—whereas most military divers use a 20 mm strap—and a thicker bezel design. The larger bezel profile provides a much more secure grip, even when wearing gloves. This feature was originally specified in procurement contracts because these watches were designed for police and military divers, as well as for personnel operating in inflatable craft and other cold or extreme environments.
The covert matte black non-reflective PVD finish used on this model is commonly specified in military contracts for special forces units, anti-terrorist teams, and other operations where low visibility equipment is essential. In the PVD process, the steel itself is not black throughout; instead, the colour is created by a specialised Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) treatment. This method is vastly superior to painted finishes found on lower-quality watches, which can fade or wear away over time.
During the PVD process, the surface of the steel is modified at a molecular level, creating a very durable finish capable of withstanding heavy use. While extremely resilient, like any surface treatment it can be damaged by severe impacts or heavy abrasion against hard materials such as rock or metal.
This model features a U.S. 12/24-hour NATO-pattern dial and a PVD-finished stainless-steel case. It is powered by a high-quality 24-jewel automatic movement with hacking function, allowing precise synchronisation. The movement also offers a 41-hour power reserve.

Why Sapphire Crystal?
Many customers ask about the advantages of sapphire crystal compared with standard mineral glass. Synthetic sapphire is widely regarded as the best material for watch crystals because it offers exceptional scratch resistance and strength. These characteristics make it particularly appealing to military personnel, security professionals, police officers, and anyone with an active outdoor lifestyle—groups that represent a large proportion of our customers.
In our experience, when watches suffer accidental damage resulting in cracked crystals, over 90 % involve mineral glass, even when hardened mineral crystals are used. Sapphire is significantly more resistant to such damage.
The manufacturing process also contributes to its durability. After the crystal is produced, it is heat-treated to remove internal stresses, improving strength and stability. The crystals are then shaped for watch use and finished with anti-reflective coatings to improve legibility.
Because of the higher cost of production, sapphire crystal is generally found only in higher-quality watches, but its durability and clarity make it the preferred choice for professional-grade timepieces.
