MWC "Depthmaster" Military Diver

The MWC Depthmaster Military Diver models represent MWC's latest heavy-duty range. These watches are exceptionally robust, featuring a sapphire crystal and 100ATM water resistance, making them suitable for deep diving with mixed gases. Designed for professional divers, they include a 24mm wide strap (compared to the standard 20mm on most military divers' watches) and a scratch-resistant ceramic bezel for improved grip in extreme cold.

Helium Escape Valve: Purpose & Functionality

All MWC 100ATM models come equipped with a helium escape valve. Many people wonder how helium enters a dive watch; the answer lies in the small size of helium molecules. Even with fully functional seals that prevent water ingress, helium molecules can still pass through, accumulating inside the watch during extended periods at great depths.

For saturation divers, who work under high-pressure conditions for prolonged durations, trapped helium can build up inside the watch. If not released, this pressure could cause significant damage, even blowing out the crystal or crown when unscrewed. The helium escape valve automatically allows these molecules to exit during decompression while preventing any external elements from entering.

Why is Helium Used in Deep Diving?

Helium is employed in deep-sea diving because it does not have the negative effects of nitrogen, such as nitrogen narcosis. Professional divers working at extreme depths often live in pressurized environments filled with an oxygen/helium mix. During decompression, this gas must be expelled to avoid dangerous pressure buildup inside the watch.

While most divers do not require a helium escape valve, it remains essential in deep-diving watches like the MWC 100ATM series to ensure fitness for extreme conditions.

Specialized Military Specifications

This particular model is nearly identical to other MWC 100ATM watches but was designed for a specific military procurement contract. The contractor requested the following features:

  • High accuracy at altitudes up to 12,000m (40,000ft) without compensatory pressurization.

  • Magnetic resistance up to 4,800 A/m (60 gauss).

  • Unbranded, sterile dial for operational security.

While the reason for these specifications remains undisclosed, they result in a unique variation of the standard Depthmaster model.

This variant includes a European NATO pattern dial and a brushed stainless steel finish. It is powered by a Swiss Ronda 715li movement with a 10-year battery life and a hacking function for precise synchronization.

The Advantage of Sapphire Crystal

Many customers ask about the benefits of sapphire crystal over standard mineral glass. Sapphire crystal is widely regarded as the superior choice because it is:

  • Extremely durable, scratch-resistant, and shatterproof.

  • Ideal for military personnel, security forces, and outdoor professionals.

  • Heat-treated to remove internal stresses, increasing resilience.

  • Equipped with dual anti-reflective coatings for enhanced visibility.

Over 90% of cracked watch crystals are found on models using mineral glass. Even hardened mineral crystals do not match the strength and durability of sapphire. The exceptional resilience of sapphire is why it is also used in high-end devices, including the latest iPhones.

While sapphire crystal increases production costs, it is a premium feature typically found only in high-end watches, ensuring long-term durability and performance.
